When The Vortex of Life was first published in 1993, Lawrence Edwards’ pioneering work on bud shapes had already attracted the attention of many scientists around the world. In the book, Edwards gave a fuller account of his research, widening it to include the forms of plants, embryos, and organs such as the heart.

Edwards died in 2004 at the age of 92 and Graham Calderwood has edited and revised this classic work.
Lawrence Edwards (1911–2004) studied the work of Rudolf Steiner and, until he retired, was a Waldorf class teacher and an upper school mathematics teacher at the Edinburgh Rudolf Steiner School. He was inspired toward scientific research after studying projective geometry with George Adams and, following a "second career," researching whether the path curves he had learned about applied also to forms in nature.
