Besides disseminating the methods and discoveries of spiritual science through publishing and distributing the works of Rudolf Steiner and other anthroposophic and spiritual authors, we at SteinerBooks we feel a responsibility to help make Anthroposophy a living practice for daily life. Rudolf Steiner did not teach a theory or begin a religious system; rather, he presented a path of knowledge, a way of knowing the spiritual world and understanding reality. This is spiritual research, the focus of our annual seminars.
At this year’s, fourth Spiritual Research Seminar, speakers will discuss, from personal experience, their views and approaches to spiritual research and its fruits in the world.
In the coming weeks, we will add further information and a schedule. Please check back for more details

This years participants Include:
JOAN deRIS ALLEN. She graduated from Columbia University School of Architecture in 1956 and practiced as an independent architect in the U.S. until 1968, when, with her husband Paul Marshall Allen and two young children, she emigrated to England. There she founded Camphill Architects at Botton Village, Yorkshire, with Gabor Talló. Her architectural work has taken her to Ireland, Scotland, and Norway. Joan lives and works in Kimberton Hills, Pennsylvania. Her books include
Living Buildings and, with Paul Marshall Allen,
The Time Is at Hand!; Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures; and
Fingal’s Cave, the Poems of Ossian and Celtic Christianity.
"Rosicrucianism as Renewed through Architecture, Painting, and Sculpture" — From several perspectives, “The Whitsun Congress” marks a—perhaps the—pivotal moment in the historical emergence of Anthroposophy. Here for the first time Anthroposophy came into its own as a universal, global impulse by explicitly connecting itself to Rosicrucianism as a path of not only spiritual but also artistic, scientific, and religious renewal. At the same time, because Rosicrucianism was connected through alchemy to the Ancient Mysteries, the Congress announced Rudolf Steiner’s mission to renew Mystery Wisdom through Anthroposophy. The first unveiling of this mission was through the arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture. Here the seeds of the Goetheanum were sown in the seals, columns, and capitals that decorated the hall. Joan Allen, an architect herself, will share the results of a lifetime of study on the Congress as well as her unique, personal collection of architectural slides.
CHRISTOPHER BAMFORD. Chris is the editor in chief of SteinerBooks and its imprints. A Fellow of the Lindisfarne Association, he has lectured, taught, and written widely on Western spiritual and esoteric traditions, and is the author of numerous articles and books, including
The Voice of the Eagle: The Heart of Celtic Christianity (Lindisfarne, 2000) and
An Endless Trace: The Passionate Pursuit of Wisdom in the West (Codhill, 2003).
"Freemasonry" — Emerging into history almost at the same time as Rosicrucianism to become an important instrument of its transmission, Freemasonry represents an esoteric tradition and lineage with roots deep in the past. Rudolf Steiner, who understood the importance of continuity in spiritual evolution, linked Anthroposophy to Masonry in many ways. Continuities with it therefore exist at all levels of Anthroposophy, most explicitly in the so-called Cognitive Ritual Section—“the Second Class”— of the Esoteric Section, which is also known as the “Misraim Service.” Text and documents relating to this work will be published in March 2007. Christopher Bamford who has just edited this volume will speak on the spiritual meaning of Freemasonry and its contribution to Steiner’s teaching.
DENNIS KLOCEK. Dennis graduated from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art with a thesis on Goethe’s color theory and then taught at a community college. In 1982, he joined Rudolf Steiner College in California, where he has directed their Consciousness Studies Program (“Goethean Studies”) since 1992. He is the author of
The Seer’s Handbook and
Seeking Spirit Vision. Dennis also oversees Doc Weather, a website based on a climatic technique that interfaces weather data from the National Weather Service and a unique geometrical system.
"Alchemy as a Spiritual Path" — With the decline of the Ancient Mysteries, alchemy arose to transmit their teachings. Rudolf Steiner, like Goethe before him, drew extensively on alchemical tradition. Anthroposophy may therefore be thought of as “alchemy renewed.” Understanding this, Dennis Klocek, through years of teaching and research, has sought to enliven and illuminate Anthroposophy through the spirit and practice of alchemy. The theme of his presentation will be “Alchemy as a Spiritual Path.”
JEAN-CLAUDE LIN was born in London in 1955 and attended one of the first Steiner schools in England. He studied Chinese language, literature, and philosophy at the University of London and did post-graduate work in philosophy, mathematics, and history of natural sciences at the University of Stuttgart. He is publishing director at Verlag Freies Geistesleben, the leading German publisher of spiritual scientific works.
"The Seven Liberal Arts" — Throughout the Middle Ages, especially in France at the School of Chartres, inner development followed the path laid down by the study and practice of the Seven Liberal Arts: Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry, Astronomy, and Music. These seven “arts” were not an academic study or a matter of “book learning,” but were rather a complete path of moral, intellectual, and spiritual transformation. Jean-Claude Lin has been working for many years out of Anthroposophy with the Seven Liberal Arts as a path of spiritual research. He will report on his remarkable findings.
ITZHAK BAR YONA was born in Jerusalem in 1945 and graduated in Architecture at Haifa’s institute of technology and is a successful inventor in various fields. He began spiritual research in 1971 as a member of the Gurdjieff School in Israel. Later, he discovered the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and Sri Aurobindo and, alone and with various groups, began assimilating in a practical way the wisdom found in them.
"Where Do Ideas Come From?" — The spiritual worlds work together with humanity for the sake of the earth through the states of consciousness that Rudolf Steiner called “living thinking,” “cognitive feeling,” and “cognitive willing”—Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition. Whenever we engage any question—or indeed enter into any kind of relationship whatsoever— to the extent that we are able to overcome our egotism and attend selflessly, we become open to the influx of the spiritual world. One way the spiritual world manifests is through ideas. Itzhak Bar Yona, a successful inventor, will report on over thirty years of exploration on the nature and source of our ideas through consciousness practices of self-remembering and meditative attention.
